Haines. Her way. September 21
Hello loyal blog readers (by which I mean maybe my co-bloggers? Do you still read this?) So very much has happened in the, y’know, month since I last gushed about food. Primarily, I guess, I (and l’maestro) have moved. Just, like, a neighborhood or two away, to Mt. Pleasant, still NWDC, but still, moving. What a bitch. It sucked, but we’re here and better for it - two roommates richer in the process, not to mention having much more space and a fabulous new kitchen, etc. On the downside, it seems as though I may have permanently lost a friend who had wanted to move with us and ultimately was left out, and given that I can’t remember ever really permanently losing a friend, this strikes me as particularly tragic, but press on we always must, and so tonight presents me with what we in the blogging industry call a blogging opportunity. Live music review!
Metric at the 9:30 club. Why does Canada produce so much awesomeness? Do you realize how little music we’d have left w/o Canada? Take away NYC and Portland too and this whole continent gives us just about nothing. We’d still have Britain and all, but I’m just saying, for a country with fewer people than California, they have a strong track record. Also, each city has its own indie supergroup (The New Pornographers-Vancouver, Arcade Fire-Montreal, and Broken Social Scene-Toronto). The gauntlet has been thrown, Calgary/Edmonton/Ottawa/Quebec/Hamilton/Regina/Moosejaw/etc. Anyway, so Metric are one of the Toronto bands, and so Emily Haines, fembot chanteuse supernova that she is, plays well with others in BSS, natch. Metric, though, they put on an excellent show. Each of my co-bloggers was there, but I’m beating them (and the 50 other obviously much more prominent bloggers in attendance I somewhat creepily recognized tonight) to the punch by throwing in my two cents first: awesome! I wish I had more to say but, well, I really never pay attention to song titles, as it would require getting my ipod out of my pocket, so I just listen to albums or collections of albums (in this case) until they start to sound tired, and then I switch. So I’ve been listening to Metric and being excited about off and on for a few weeks now, and they did not disappoint. That said, I feel like perhaps they have more reggae-tinged songs that I like that they did not play? I could be hallucinating, there’s really no way to tell. At least not until one of my more organized (anal) cobloggers posts a setlist in the comments (or finds one on another more anal local blogger’s blog and links it) (CV I’m looking at you). This is obviously crucial information for all of you out there… ok, how to make this useful. Listen here: Metric, they play excellent poppy hooky rock with also some keyboards, yay, and what puts it over the top? Emily Haines is hot hot hot and wears very short dresses. She bounces around and generally has fun and so if you have the opportunity, I don’t see why you wouldn’t go. I stood in the balcony because, due to a variety of factors, we were pretty much arriving as they went on (actually I’d probably stand in the balcony regardless b/c fewer people = more space and air and so forth for me, which overall makes me happier) but I would advise you to get there early and stand up front, b/c seriously, what kind of underwear does the lovely Ms. Haines prefer? I wouldn’t know, but I gotta think those lucky folk in the front have an idea. The moral of the story? Music is good and I am a lech. COMMENT! Also, stay tuned - concerts on Saturday and Monday too, I feel inspiration upon me.

I have put up my own review here, so you can compare the two. But mine has a setlist. And links to pictures from the actual show.

Ok, I can now provide at least one song that I wished they’d played and didn’t: glass ceiling.
Also, your review is better than mine, I think, in that it has multiple coherent sentences (though I like to think of that as part of my charm - that and parenthetical - and dashed - asides). And you’re completely right-on about that airdrumming dude, wtf was that? Though you guys seemed to be chatting by the end of it - CV has a new pal?

No new pal, partially because in checking to make sure he was not right in front of me after going to get one of the beers he was drinking, he gave me a look of Is-this-ok, with double thumbs up as a question. Sure, I didn’t hate him like some others, but I wasn’t impressed. I think everything I said to him was in relation to him standing too close to me. Which, as you know, is a sure sign of me not wanting to spend more time with someone at a concert or later. Unless I already know that person. Or they’re a non-annoying woman.
