Autumn mist frolicking.

Wednesday it was hot as balls out. October freaking 10th and it was just brutal, awful. Then at like 10 or 11 pm it rained (which is always nice) and shortly thereafter I went to sleep. When I woke up yesterday it was officially fall. I gave it an extra day to make sure, but there’s no denying it, at least in the arrondissement federaux, fall has arrived! Things I like about fall:

Food. You can make chili again finally. Chili powder is presently in the works at my house, with an EDSFC (Estimated Date of the Season’s First Chili) of next weekend. Not only that, but it becomes reasonable to start doing serious heavy food like butternut squash things, delicious braised meats, and apple cider. Oh my, I loves me some harvest time.

Football. Granted this started a good month ago, but sweet god do I love it and it really doesn’t feel like football season until it gets a little chilly. As an aside, do you realize that the college basketball season kicks off (first night of practice) this weekend!? (!)

Fashion. Is it just me or does DC do particularly well on this front in the fall (and winter)? On the one hand, I particularly like being able to shelve the shorts for another year and be comfortable in jeans again, and especially like when I finally get to get out my jackets and coat, etc (not there yet, for me). But better still are all the ladies out there already rocking their soft leather jackets and colorful, tasteful scarves and jaunty chapeaux. I’m a year-round admirer, no doubt, but in a DC summer, it seems like the average… look… of the lovely ladies of the city goes down a notch or two. Obviously, I have no room to judge, but nevertheless it seems to me DC summers are just so damn hot that everyone ends up slobbing around in flip-flops. I think that this is particular to DC, too, because in the summers in, say, my beloved midwestern college town, they were the *best* times for girl-watching. Call it prurient if you must, but those girls shone in the summer, out jogging in their sports bras and short shorts. That was dynamite stuff. When it became fall or winter there the girls (obviously I’m generalizing here but bear with me) put on their enormous college sweatshirts and were generally less (though still) appealing until spring hit again. DC flips that on its head, and I’ve got to say, I am very, very pleased to have a bit of crisp in the air again.

I am so right there with you on the food front. Tho I made my frist chili around October 1st (damn the man.) I’m just never inspired with my summer cooking. It’s all salads and stuff on the grill. Hardly soulful.
