So, I was really good through beach week. I mean, really good. I didn’t eat meat, I didn’t eat carbs, I just ate fruits and vegetables. Ok, I had a nibble or two of gouda. But I didn’t even drink beer, mostly just liquor. Oh, and I went on a number of long walks and even did some of the working out things that the trainer showed me last week. I knew I had to be good because I was flying back to kansas city yesterday and the weekend in kc/lawrence would be full of temptation.
My first lapse was basically immediate - in my layover in the charlotte airport I scarfed a piece of spinach and mushroom sbarro’s. Damnable decision, of course. The toppings were my attempt at mitigation, but as soon as I walked a bit further and saw the simple salads in the like quick deli thing I felt really bad about my decision. Thing was, it was a really mediocre slice of pizza - if I’m going to lapse it should at least be for something transcendent, is my thinking.
Dinner at Patok’s, a swell little Mexican joint I’d never had before, gave me the opportunity for transcendence, and, well, I took it in the form of 2 amazing Sonoran tacos. And some guacamole. And, ok, too much refried beans and rice. I felt so fucking sick afterwards and had nasty heartburn for the rest of the night. Still, pulling into Lawrence at about 3am last night I had an unmistakable urge to just say fuckit and get my belly full of burrito king before calling it a night - former lawrencians, you know what I’m talking about - however, I resisted. I went to the grocery store instead, got some bananas and 60-cal yogurt (after inspecting every available brand I determined this was the lowest.) and managed to go to sleep without a snack - got up this morning and ate one of each, and feeling very satisfied now. Satisfied enough that I can be good at Blanc today? Remains to be seen - moreover, it’s still a long, long weekend ahead, filled with wedding hors d’oeurves and one planned dim sum outing. I recognize that I will not stay perfect but I feel like maintaining my no-beer, no-dessert, no-seconds, always-breakfast, never-late-night-snacking regimen should suffice for this weekend, and then back on the wagon Monday. Deal?

Jessica had a beef tongue burrito at the Burrito King last night. Oh, Lawrence.

Good luck!

I have tried to trick so many people into going to Burrito King, it’s not even funny. They always catch on and then refuse to go. So sad.

And I totally got the tongue taco out of hilariousness, but I am frankly serious when I say it’s the best thing on their menu. I even ordered it a SECOND time, this one SOBER, and it just kicked the CRAP out of the lame ol’ chicken taco I also ordered. It’s like how food from poor countries is always better than food from rich countries: they just try harder. You could tell it had been simmered for like three days with all sorts of wacky spices.
Anyway - lingua taco. I seriously highly recommend it, even sober. It was genuinely awesome.
